My Muddy Life

Author's Note: This is a piece in the point of view of a pig. This is meant to be creative and different.

Dear anybody who is going to the State Fair,

Hello my name is Peggy, I am a Pig. I am not just any old pig, I am the most beautiful pig there is. My coat is shiny and smooth and my teeth are as white as snow. The best part about being a pig is today. Today is a very special day; it is not any normal day. Today I am getting taken to the State Fair to be shown to thousands of people. They will look and admire me all day and hopefully they will vote me first prize and I will get a blue ribbon!

The preparation for today isn’t as easy as any pig would think. First I am getting fed so much food to make me more plump so I can look more attractive, next I get bathed in soy milk to make my coat look extra shiny. Finally I have to learn a routine to impress the judges. My routine is different then everyone else and I am very excited!

I very much so hope I am going to win! Please, all I ask is for you to come and see me and vote for me. I would be forever grateful of you. Thanks and have fun at the State Fair!

Yours Truly,
Peggy the Pig

Power to the People

Author’s Note: This is a response to the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson explaining a theme in the story, power.

When I say lottery, what do u think of? Do you think of money and happiness or death and sorrow? In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson the lottery is not what we think, it is between life and death. In this cured town, if you get an evil black dot on your slip of paper you have been chosen to be stoned to death by your friends, enemies and loved ones. The worst part about is you can’t do anything about it because the government is in total power. One of the main themes in the story “The Lottery” is power because the government has total power in the town.
First off, the government makes you go to this town meeting and even worse you can be picked to be stoned to death. The government had complete control over the town and they wanted to remind you of that with this annual lottery. This kind of power is not good because it is a cruel way for someone to die. Think, what if your kids and friends were throwing little pebbles at you to your death? Do you think that would be your pleasurable way to die? I know I don’t think so. The Government in the town is cruel, I know for a fact I could not watch my mother being stoned to death. Government should not tell you when to do something and how you are going to die unless you have maybe committed a crime or have to pay a bill.

In conclusion, the government in the short story “The Lottery” has total control but in a very cruel way. They have control over too much in their town and they kill innocent people annually just because it’s a tradition. The cruelest thing about it is they make everybody in their town kill them by throwing rocks at them, even their children.

My Wishes

Author's Note: This piece is in the point of view of a sad, lonely Marigold that is the last one in the flower bed.

Dear Keeper of this Ground,

Hello. Remember me? I was your favorite flower about 2 months back. You would feed me with care every day. My petals were orange with a slight pink hue. I sat here happy, every day talking to my friends and swaying in the wind. I loved the feel of airstream through my tough petals. Those were the days; I use to love my life and couldn’t wait for those breezy summer days.

But, that was then and this is now. I am now the only one in the flower bed outside your bedroom window. I have wilting petals and I hate the wind, all it does is make it harder to keep my petals attached. I have two petals left; I would give up anything for my old life back.

All I am asking for is some water, a little love, and a few friends. I know that my time may be coming for this year but I’ll be back in about 8 months after the evil white fluff leaves. When that time comes I would really like some friends, I love having a nice petal to petal conversation with them.

Please don’t forget me,

Georgina your marigold

You Never Know Who You Might End Up In Love With

Author's Note: This essay is about the book Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti. This story is about two young girls who fall in love with the same guy. This essay will explain how the main character Lani is a dynamic character while working on using better vocabulary.

If you think about it fate and serendipity play a huge role in our lives. In the beginning of the realistic fiction novel Something Like Fate, Lani and her best friend Erin are inseparable until Erin finds a new boy friend Jason. Lani is a true believer in date and thinks her whole life revolves around it. Every day she checks her horoscopes to see if it is going to be a good day or a bad day. In the beginning of the story Lani had different attitudes than the end and this shows she is a dynamic character.

When Erin got the perfect boyfriend she could ask for in the beginning of the book, Jason, Lani started having to hang out with him more than Erin. In the beginning Lani didn’t like Jason, she though he was not right nor Erin at all. But Lani's attitude changed towards Jason very quickly. When Lani started hanging out with Erin and Jason she realized a certain bond between herself and Jason. She thought to herself on page 56 "I can feel chemistry between us." Lani then developed strong feelings towards Jason and she couldn't tell her best friend, Erin
.
Although, Lani's attitude changed toward Jason doesn't mean that Jason is the only one that Lani's attitude changed towards. As I have stated Erin and Lani were great friends since they were in kindergarten, they were friends that could tell each other anything. But when Erin got a boy friend you would think their friendship would blossom but it did the opposite. Erin and Lani’s friendship was now on its way to dying. Lani was always the one to plan everything but when Erin started hanging out with Jason that all changed. Lani was now the third wheel and never got to do anything with just Erin, Jason always had to be there. Lani thought that Erin would always be there for her but Lani's attitude toward Erin changed as the novel went on. Eventually Erin went to a summer camp for 3 months and Lani and Jason hung out a lot. Jason wrote Erin a letter breaking up with her and he and Lani started dating. As you could assume, Erin was very unhappy with Lani and they had a huge fight. Erin then turned everyone against Lani at school by sending an email to the school about what happened. Erin of course blew everything out of proportion and Lani started to get bullied by everyone at school. Lani got dirty looks daily. This wasn’t fair for Erin to do this to Lani, she should have been happy that Lani was happy with Jason.

Lani had to go through a lot with Jason and Lani, but she grew as a person from it all, so it didn’t turn out completely horrible. Lani became stronger mentally throughout this book; she had to learn to fight through people bullying her. People would send her notes and she just had to ignore them and remember that she is happy with Jason. She stopped seeing Jason and that was the “hardest thing I ever did”, as she said in the book. She didn’t just grow mentally she learned that love can last even through tough times; you just have to pull through it and persevere. This is a reason that Lani is a dynamic character. After all of this blew over, Lani was a better person, she got her best friend back, and her dream boy friend and she made up.

Lani had some tough times in high school, but she also affected others too. Lani was very strong throughout everything she went through. She taught other people that get bullied that they can still be happy. She was still her up beat self and that’s what they had to learn to do. Also she affected Lani entirely, she taught her many life lessons that everyone should learn. One of the many lessons were everything can be repaired no matter the extent. Whether it’s a friendship or your self-esteem.. Lani effected many people in this novel and everyone that reads this book learns these lessons as well.

In conclusion, Lani and her best friend Erin had an enormous fight but they pulled through while teaching others life lessons. Lani’s attitude changed greatly throughout this novel. The book Something Like Fate has great lessons and characters that attitudes changed throughout the story. Lani started the story being a weak person mentally but by the end she was stronger than the strongest man alive. This shows that Lani was for sure a dynamic character. As Lani did, always remember to persevere when things go wrong, it never pays to be down on yourself all it does it brings you down.

Cells Need Your Help

Author’s Note: This is a research essay on viruses, what the symptoms are and how they help and harm us.

You can catch a virus at anytime, any day of the year. About half of America’s populations don’t know how to correctly get rid of a virus or the symptoms of a virus people get every day. If you don’t know, a virus is a sickness that attaches its self to a host’s cell that is unable to grow or reproduce when not attached to a host (Dictionary). Viruses aren’t always bad; they have a good side about them too. Even though viruses get people sick every day, many people don't know the key things about them such as symptoms and ways that viruses are good for us.

Some viruses people catch every day. A few of the three most common viruses are small pox, cold sores, and influenza (Fisher). The ways you can tell if you have one of these viruses are called symptoms. The first symptoms of smallpox start two weeks before the peak of the illness, but after 14 to 17 days you can’t infect any one. Before the 14 to 17 days you can infect anyone that you come in contact with. If you have any of these symptoms: fever, body discomfort, headache, back pain, puking, or diarrhea you might have small pox (Mayo Clinic). Small pox has been around for years and has killed millions of people. The next virus is influenza, this virus is also known as the flu. There are a numerous different types of influenza such as the stomach flu, bird flu, and the swine flu. People have to suffer through the flu every day and it spread very quickly. The symptoms of influenza are very severe and can last for a long time. Symptoms of influenza are: fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, vomiting and body ache (Mayo Clinic). Many types of flu have come from animals or mammals, such as the bird and swine flu. The last of the three types of viruses I am listing is cold sore. Cold sores are red blister like bubbles by your mouth. They can be spread by sharing lip gloss, lip balm, or kissing. The symptoms of cold sores are different than many viruses. These symptoms are all near the mouth. The symptoms are: a small but very painful blister on your lip area and a tingly feeling around on your lips. These symptoms usually last about 10 to 14 days (Mayo Clinic). There are many viruses and these are only a few but people get sick from viruses every day.

Every time you catch a virus, some of your cells and organisms are being affected or killed. Viruses attack all things, for example animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria. A virus cannot move or live by itself, but it can go into a host’s body in several ways. It can be carried by another host, inhaled, or even blown into you by the wind. If you come in contact with someone that has a virus even just the simplest touch of their hand you could get sick. Many people don’t know how a virus actually attaches and spreads throughout your body. First the virus tries to enter the cell, and then the DNA brings in the virus. The virus then infects the cell and the virus spreads and spreads inside the cell. The cell then bursts and the virus spreads throughout the body from cell to cell (Fisher). The quicker the cell bursts, the quicker the virus spreads throughout your body. When you hear to drink lots of Vitamin C when you have a specific illness, that is because Vitamin C helps build your immune system and help your cells fight off the virus. So far it seems that all viruses are, are bad for us but you will soon be notified that that is not the case.

Viruses can be bad because they kill your cells but they can be both harmful and helpful. As you can tell so far all of the facts you have learned about viruses are bad, but they can help us too. Viruses are used in vaccines (shots) to prevent diseases. A vaccine is made from weakened virus particles that can’t cause disease. They take very weak viruses and put them into shots to help avoid diseases. That might sound crazy but the strength of the virus is so petite that it cannot turn into anything that can get us sick (Carr). Without viruses we wouldn’t have shots so that means we might have more diseases and more people would die. This proves that viruses are in fact substantial and superior.

In conclusion, people don’t know a lot about viruses that they should; they aren’t only bad they help us by preventing diseases. Viruses might get people sick all the time, but lots of people everywhere don't know the key characteristics of them. Viruses do infect specific tissue in the body and make us feel horrible for days sometimes weeks, but they help us because they are in vaccines to prevent diseases (Carr). Next time you have a virus and you are complaining to everyone how horrible you feel remember, some people might be feeling worse than you but because we have viruses some diseases are becoming rarer.

Nature's Perfections

Author’s Note: This is a response to two poems called “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Field Below”. I am going to explaining the meaning, purpose, tone and mood. Both of the poems are songs as well. They have things similar and different but similar purposes. “Big Yellow Taxi” is sung by Joni Mitchell and Counting Crows. It is about someone trying to stop people from ruining nature to put up big buildings and cities. “Field Below” is sung by Regina Specter. “Field Below” is about a woman who lives in a sky scraper but she wishes she lives in the country where she could look out her window and sees a field of flowers.

Have you ever heard the song “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell? Or have you ever heard the song “Field Below” by Regina Specter? Did you know that they both started as poems? A lot of songs actually start as poems. Even though they are songs they have a great purpose, meaning, and show great tone and moods.

The purposes of these poems are similar but different in little ways. The purpose of “Big Yellow Taxi” is to inform us that we are ruining nature by putting up big cities. The meaning is to tell us to never forget how beautiful nature is and we don’t truly know how amazing it is until it’s completely gone. Nature is as precious as finding gold in a cave. We need to cherish it. The meaning of “Field Below” is that you don’t know how lucky you are if every day you get to see fields and sunsets when you look out your window and not a sidewalk of a big city. Her purpose of telling us this is to tell us to cherish our time in the country because we don’t know when we will see it again.

As you can see the purpose and the meaning are sort of similar but the tone and mood are even more similar. Both of these poems are about nature and how people are taking it away and how big cities are affecting it. The mood of “Big Yellow Taxi” is sympathetic and bitter and the tone is helpful and determined. The mood and the tone are almost identical in the two poems.

In conclusion,these two poems

Were The Free Blacks Actually Free in the North?

Author's Note: This is a research essay on the free blacks in the north in the mid to late 1800's.

“Go make me some chowder!” yelled a master to her black slave in the North. “Right away” the salve responded cautiously. Minutes later the slave came back with the soup. “Thank you and I have something to tell you. I am setting you free on your own. Our region is sending our slaves free but you will have restrictions. You must never eat, drink, marry, or nurse a white person. Also going to church with whites and being in the Jury is against all rules.” This is something that would happen in the North. If you really think about it the “free” African Americans in the North might have been free but not free enough! I believe that African Americans weren’t free enough politically, economically, or socially.

The people in the North started letting people go in the early 1800’s. Nobody really knew the reason for it except they began to believe slavery was wrong. After the slaves were let go some of them could pay taxes, some were allowed to vote, and some could perform duties. The only down side is all of these amenities could not be done with whites. The color of your skin shouldn’t impact the level of freedom you have. The blacks couldn’t change the laws because of course they didn’t have the right to do so easily. The African Americans had specific laws that they couldn’t break and if they did who knows what would happen. Some of the states did have less specific laws, in some states blacks were allowed to sit in juries, file lawsuits, and vote just like the many white people but this was very rare and not many states allowed it. I have seen a picture in Document A and it shows that only one state (Massachusetts) had black men jury and voting rights. Only one state has two crucial laws. I believe this is very wrong all states should have equal rights for all blacks and whites.

Even though some states gave blacks the right to help with the government, they hardly had any rights when it came to getting a job or owning property. For example, in Document B it states those blacks were not allowed to dine or drink with whites. This means that blacks couldn’t be a waitress or waiter. Also it states that blacks can’t nurse a white, which means that blacks could only nurse blacks and no one else. African Americans wanted to be mechanics and a sales person but no one would ever hire them because of their skin color. There is a quote in document B, it is “Shall I be a mechanic? No one will employ me and no white boys will work with me. Shall I be a Merchant? No one have me in there office.” This quote is from a black boy’s perspective and telling us that people won’t give him a job because of his race. Also blacks were allowed to own property in the North as well. They could own as much as they could afford and they could live on their property or they could use it for farm land. There only restriction with land is they couldn’t be neighbors with whites.

The blacks obviously had political and economic problems but they also had social problems as well. The first and largest factor is that blacks weren’t allowed to socialize with whites at all; they were barely able to be in the same room as them. In the 1800’s whites were very strict about blacks socially. There is one quote in document B that stood out to me. The quote is “We shall not make the black man a slave; we shall not buy him or sell him; but we shall not associate with him.” This tells us clearly that even though slavery is ending but whites still don’t trust the blacks. I don’t think this is right because if you are taking away slavery, yes you are giving them more rights but you still don’t socialize with them or even give them the right to eat or drink with you. I find this all offensive and denote to all people to even believe that people did this!

In conclusion, the blacks were in the middle of slavery when the North decided that it wasn’t right. So they gave them all rights, no they gave them very few rights and called them free. Even though they were free they could barely look at a white person without getting in trouble. Some people might think this helped but I don’t. But of course it leads us to where we are today so it couldn’t have been that bad of a decision. Also, did you see me mention black women? No I have not mentioned black women because women didn’t have rights beck then. Woman couldn’t vote either, they had to stay home a cook and clean the house. Blacks had politically, economically, or socially problems in the mid to late 1800’s and earlier but now blacks are completely free and all this lead us to where our country is today.

Just a Heads Up

Author’s Note: This is a parody poem of the poem by William Carlos Williams “This is Just to Say”. The parody is going to be about the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

I'm sorry but
I killed your
Dog Wellington

Because it seemed
You loved him
More than me
And my son

Forgive me
But your husband
Had an affair with my wife
And you loved a bloody dog more than me
So you had it coming.

This piece is relating to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The book is in the point of view of Christopher but my poem is in the point of view of Christopher's dad. His dad killed his neighbors dog Wellington, this piece is Christopher's dad talking to his neighbor. The attitude is sympathetic then sarcastic. The mood of this story is shocked and over-whelmed. Along with the mood, the tone is sarcastic. The reader feels sorry for the woman getting told this.

Perfect or Not?

Author’s Notes: This is a Word Choice or Context piece about the main character Sam in Before I Fall. It is going to show high vocabulary with adjectives.

Are there things in your life that are perfect? Or do you have things in your life you wish you could change? Sam from Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver is a stunning, popular, and pleasant high school girl. There can be the most beautiful girl in the whole school and Sam can steal her beauty away from her. By far her best features are her big green eyes that sparkle as a sparkling gem would. Sam's gorgeous, golden brown hair flows like a river. Her lips are perfectly plump and pink and she’s always flawless. When Sam walks in confidently wearing her designer jeans and her perfect make-up free face the whole room stops and stares at her. She is as beautiful as Jennifer Lopez. But, perfect people never are truly perfect. There is always a flaw somewhere with someone perfect. In fact Sam isn’t perfect; she has one very important flaw. Sam’s flaw is she can’t be nice to everyone. She is as stunning as a tree in bloom but her attitude towards people she doesn’t like is as bad as Lindsay Lohan. You can be as the best looking girl in town but if you aren’t nice, no one will ever want to even be your friend. Sam has always wanted to change that about herself, she doesn’t like the fact she is mean but her best friend, Lindsay is very judgmental.

Sam maybe gorgeous but she doesn’t always have the nicest attitude. Anybody that in Sam’s mind is a “loser” Sam is mean to. I feel that everyone should be treated the same way weather they are your friend or not. Everybody can be crabby and very irritable but Sam every second is a mystery. You never know what might come out of her mouth, but Sam believes that everything happens for a reason so she never takes anything personally. And because of that she doesn’t care if she hurt anyone else. She doesn’t take note when someone might just be having a bad day. She just keeps on piling everything on the “loser” and stays being mean to them.

If you don’t take things personally doesn’t mean you don’t get jealous; Sam is the most jealous person I know. If someone has something she doesn’t she need it. She is like a lion fighting against another for a mate. She will never give up on something that she is jealous about. Sam thinks and thinks until she figures something out; she doesn’t give up on anything.

In conclusion, Sam is as stunning as a flower garden in the summer time but has an attitude like a troll. You can be pretty but if you aren’t nice, good bye to all your beauty. Your inside beauty speaks louder than outside beauty. If you are selective about who you are nice to and who you are a crab to, you are a lot like Sam. People tell her to stay sweet and stay pure but she doesn’t care. Pure or tainted Sam will be Sam and no one can change that.

Parts and Pieces

Author’s Note: This is a Word Choice and Context piece explaining the mood, tone, purpose, and figurative language in the story “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes.

Does your family have hardships? Have you ever wanted to just give up on something but decided not to? These are all things involved with the story “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. This piece shows great perseverance and integrity throughout. The mother is explaining to her son that her life hasn’t always been great but she is still alive and things are getting better. She shows this by saying “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” This is a metaphor beautifully used by Langston Hughes to show us that her life hasn’t always been elegant.

Even though, this poem shows us great perseverance, it also makes you think about your life versus your life. As you are reading this poem it makes you feel sympathetic for the mother and it makes you happy that your life isn’t as bad as hers. You never know what will happen in your life but then in the end it tells you that she never gave up and she is still “going and climbing”. This is called the mood, the mood is very similar to the tone but tone is how the author feels and mood is how the reader feels. For example the tone of this story would be distressed and withered. In my mind the author was feeling sad and distressed when writing this piece.

In conclusion, this piece has a good meaning to persevere but is a gloomy story. In this story the mood and tone are very important. They help us understand the writer better because a writer doesn’t just write something like this without some relation. Langston Hughes must have had a relationship to something like this. But Langston Hughes gave us a great message here. His message was never give up and I agree with him. When things get rough just keep going!

It Girl

Author’s Note: This is a piece focusing in on conflict and resolution. This is a creative story describing the problem then discussing how the problem was solved. The purpose is to show that lying is never the answer.

I grab my new American Eagle top with my brand new Vanity jeans and place them gently on my skinny body. Then, I walk into my bathroom and brush my stunning, long blonde hair just perfectly placing it on my shoulders. Glaze on my mascara on my incredibly long eye lashes. Grab my pink, sparkly Victoria Secret lip gloss and glide it on. Looking in the mirror, I know this is going to be a good day.

After getting ready for the day, I go downstairs and eat my healthy cereal and re-glide on my lip gloss for a fresh glow. Then, I walk slowly toward my silver Toyota Camry. Open the garage and I’m off, scared to my new school.

When I arrive I’m not welcomed as cheerfully as I thought. People shoot me glares, looks and deadly stares. I could tell people were looking at me like I didn’t fit in at all. I brush it off, walk inside and go to my new locker. I think I have decided I want people to call me, Rose. It has a nice ring and it’s easy to write. My real name is Doris but I absolutely hate it! Rose, I could get use to that.

“Hi, you must be new. I’m Gabbi. What’s your name?”

I look at her startled, “Oh, hi I’m Rose. I’m from Connecticut.”

“Well, I’m the class president. I just wanted to stop by and say hi.”

“Thanks, I really appreciate it.” I responded still kind of startled.

Gabbi eventually walked away and then I thought, Who do I want to be at this school? Do I want to be sporty, girly, nerdy, or even maybe the bull? I think I want to be one of the popular girly girls even though I can shoot a mean three pointer. At my last school I was the jock- girl and that didn’t work out too well. I need a change in my life.

I glance at my schedule, math my best subject. Alright now I can’t act too smart now. As I walk into class I see all of the confused looks on the kids faces. I would say twenty out of the twenty-five kids in my class were staring at me. I sit down cautiously in the only open desk I can see. I soon figure out that I am sitting next to the most popular girl in school. Perfect way to get to the top of the school.

“Hey I’m Rose. I love your nails!” I say to the girl next to me sweetly.

She looks at my kind of confused and disgusted. “Umm, hi I’m Brittney. Thanks.” She seems alright I guess. I just smiled and looked away.

I knew everything I learned in math already but I tried to ignore the fact that I am smarter than I am making myself seem. Next up, Foods. Overall I am good at cooking but I always use way too much salt. I walk into the class room and I actually feel welcomed. Probably four different people introduced themselves to me. I met Sherry, a nerdy red head, Jenna, a cute blond, Jacob an autistic boy, and last and certainly not least Ben. Ben was the cutest boy I have seen yet. He didn’t seem stuck up, actually he was really nice. I sat next to him and I learned that he has a younger sister in eighth grade and he plays basketball. Great now I can help him with his three-pointer.

Foods class was super boring besides the fact that Ben was in it. Ben and I walked to Science together and then we saw Brittney. She looked me up and down and said “Walk.” I thought this was very rude so I just told her he showed me where my science was and that was all. She didn’t seem very nice after that.
I walk into science class and sit down. I got introduced to one person. Hope. She seemed very nice and super smart. She used words I didn’t know at all but she was super nice. I sat down next to her and then I saw him.

Jeremy from summer camp! He was at this school, NO! I thought rapidly and remembered that he said he was from New York. I totally didn’t think he was going to go here. What are the chances? OK, I think I should tell him he had the wrong girl. No maybe just own up to it. No I will tell him I don’t remember him. Great plan, kind of. I think he noticed me, darn. He smiles and waves at me. Ok now he knows who I am for sure. He walks over to me and says “Oh my gosh, are you new here?” I look at him nervously because he could blow up my entire plan of being popular. He has seen my very nerdy math, sporty girl side. I will be doomed at this school. “Umm.. Hi, yeah I am new and you are?” I said as cautious as I could. “I’m Jeremy from summer camp. Don’t you remember?” I stare at him trying to look like I’m thinking. “No sorry. Anyway I’m Rose.” I said with a little smile. “I thought you told me your name was Doris at summer camp. “ He told me looking very puzzled. Then the bell rang so we both sat down and agreed on talking after class.
Class ended and I tried to escape as fast as I could. Jeremy just had to catch up with me. He didn’t understand that I wasn’t the same girl so he just kept asking me questions. The quote “One lie just leads to another” is so true. I have learned that throughout this day. I just have to keep lying and lying to Jeremy to keep my secret.

Besides Jeremy, Ben is in my Gym class. He is very good at just about everything but it is hard trying to keep the secret of not actually being girly. I met so many people today that I don’t think I will remember anyone. I got to be really good friends with one girl named Sydney, she isn’t the most popular girl but she is really nice and has potential. She is in two of my classes and we sit next to each other in both.

Well I survived my first day at school and now on to work. My dad has lined me up to work at a The Smooth E’s smoothie restaurant. I’m not sure if I’m excited or not, but I will try and make the best of it. I head off to work as excited as I am going to be.

I worked for four hours and all of it was training, but it was more fun than I thought. When I get home the first thing I’m going to do is eat. I’m so hungry I could eat a hippo, maybe even two. I’m pulling into the driveway and I park the car; then I check my phone. One new message: Jeremy. Shoot, I forgot I gave him my number at summer camp. Alright I’ll open it. “Did you change school?” I read nervously to myself. I try and think okay, should I say no or yes? I think I should just tell him it was me. Alright a quick swipe of my keyboard and my rapid fingers go crazy. “Um, Yeah sorry about earlier I go by Rose now. I didn’t recognize you. Sorry.” I responded and then studied it. Alright I think that is all good, send. Now all I can do is wait for a response.

Five minutes past and then I feel the buzz and rush to my phone. “Oh don’t worry about it. I am just really confused. So you go by Rose now? Cool, I’ll have to explain this to lots of people. Tell this to lots of people, what? Now I am the confused one, who would he have to explain this to? Whatever I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.

I talked to Jeremy for like an hour last night then I finally fell asleep. I wake up and repeat yesterday but with a new skirt and top. I can’t wait to show off this outfit, I love it! When I get to school I am more excited just to get out of the car and into school than ever. Then I remember Jeremy and I become kind of scared. I don’t know what is going to happen today. Walk in and I see Jeremy and he is talking to Ben. He better not be telling Ben everything about me and that I lied to everyone yesterday. I walk over confidently. I wave and say “Hi” sweetly to both of them. I can tell Ben is kind of looking at me weird. Then he asked me, “Jeremy just told me that your real name is Doris and that you guys went to summer camp together. Most importantly he told me you’re good at basketball! I didn’t think you were the sporty type yesterday. No offence or anything.” I look at him in shock; I swallow hard and try to think about what I’m going to say. “Yeah, but I go by Rose now. I don’t exactly like the name Doris. About summer camp, yes I did go with Jeremy and he found out the hard way that I have a pretty good three pointer. I don’t know if u made a mistake of what I just said or not but I just hope that he takes this well. He just smiles and says”Well, you’re going to have to show me sometimes.” I am so relived. “But I wished you would have told me about your real name and you told me you didn’t play sports.” Ben added with an intense kind of look. Then the bell rings. “Alright I’ll see you later, sorry.” I respond in a rush. I am not so reveled and I don’t know if it’s just me but I notice everyone looking at me weird. I must just be me being paranoid.

I get to my class and Gabbi is in this class and she’s not acting so right. I walk over to her and ask “Is everything ok?” and she looks at me disgusted, “You told me you didn’t play any sports and your name was Rose. People are telling me you play basketball and your name is Doris.” I look at her very strangely and then I reply” Oh I’m sorry. I didn’t think it was important and I play basketball but not that much.” I got cut of ever so rudely “But you specifically told me you don’t play sports and people are kind of mad about this because they think that you lied to all of us and don’t want us to know something.” “Well I never lied to anybody I told people what is going on in my life right now.” Then Gabbi warned me that people might ask her and think about what I am going to say because people are mad. I thought this was all very weird because I just met all of these people yesterday except Jeremy. I just kind of blew it by and didn’t really care but then again I don’t know what I’m going to say if anybody asks me again.

I am now in last hour and four more people have asked me about the truth. I had to tell them everything I told Gabbi and Ben but people truly are really mad about this. Even Hope the person I thought was so nice and wanted to actually get to know me is mad at me. She didn’t say anything to me and I even said “Hi” to her and I didn’t get a response. Well I hope my whole school year isn’t going to be like this!

After I got home from school I was thinking about everybody at school and my lie. I have to do something and fast. I stayed in my room all night trying to think of a good plan but I failed with all my ideas. I have no clue what to do so what else but call my best friend from my old school, but she didn’t have any ideas. I hope that I find something quick!

I hardly got any sleep that night; all I could think about was Ben all night. I feel so bad for lying to everybody. I got to school and nobody talked to me just about all day except Jeremy. It seems like this is getting worse every day! I need help; I think it’s time to do something big. I have to say I’m sorry at lunch. This is the only thing I could think of last night. In language arts all I could right is what I am going to say. I made a script and tried to memorize it as best I can and then I realize I only have five minutes till lunch. I then feel a big lump come into my stomach. I don’t even want to eat. I sit alone at lunch, leaving lunch to me and my thoughts. Lunch is almost over and I decided I need to do this now. I stand up shaky in the hands and feet. Everybody I now looking at me and it probably didn’t help because I started to talk very loudly. I said very loudly “Okay if I can have everybody’s attention please.” Then everybody looked at me and I became very sad. Then I continued “I’m sure everybody has heard about the truth in my life. I am not a big girly girl; I am one of the biggest tom-boys you will ever know! I love basketball and I play video games. I am sorry for lying to all of you. I just wanted a different life. I just wish for everyone to stop giving me glares and remember that I said I’m sorry. That’s all I wanted to say. Thanks.” I saw a few people smile and a few start to clap and a few just laugh. I thought the people that laughed were kind of rude but I forgave them because I am the culprit here. I feel relieved and the lump comes out of my stomach.

I leave lunch feeling better and I love what I just did. I now have people talking to me again and smiling at me in the halls. I love my decision that I made.

I want everyone who reads this to always reconsider lying to anyone under any circumstances. Never lie they just pile up and pile up. Lying is always the wrong choice no matter how easy it may seem.

I Object

Author’s note: This is a piece focusing on Text Analysis. I am writing a play of a scene in the book Rules of the Road. The purpose is to show how a teenager can make a huge difference is someone’s life.

Narrator 1: Mrs. Gladstone is an old woman who is facing her fear right now. Her son, Elden is trying to take over her beloved business.

Narrator 2: Jenna has been Mrs. Gladstone’s chauffer and assistant all summer. They have got to know each other very well over the course of this time.

Narrator 1: Mrs. Gladstone explains to the stock holders of her business what happens today this is their reaction.

Mrs. Gladstone: *Standing at podium* I am retiring from my beloved job today.

Jenna: *pop up from sitting in a seat in the back of the room* Mrs. Gladstone, no!

Crowd: *Few clap* *most have their mouths wide open*

Jenna: *walk towards the podium*

Elden: *Whisper Loudly*

Mrs. Gladstone: Oh, but she is a stock holder, Elden. Fifty Shares. I gave them to her.

Elden: *Look disgusted*

Jenna: *Stand at the podium* I got fired today,

Crowd: *Gasp*

Jenna: I’m Mrs. Gladstone’s Driver and personal assistant. Elden has just tried to put me back on a plane to Chicago because I don’t like the way he’s been treating his mother. I don’t like the way he’s been treating this company, either.

Elden: *Stand up* I think that is quite enough!

Man 1: Let her speak!

Elden: *sit down*

Jenna: *Take a deep breath* See I know what selling shoes ought to be because I had the privilege to know Harry Bender. I’ve been hanging with Mrs. Gladstone all summer long. I’ve gotten dunked in what good business should be like so much that I can smell something wrong a mile off.

Elden: *Croaks and Squeaks*

Jenna: I’ve been on the road with Mrs. Gladstone this summer. We’ve visited Gladstone stores from Peoria to Shreveport. And I can tell you those economic brands aren’t doing this company one bit of good. People come into Gladstone Shoes expecting quality, just like people on a paper route expect their carrier to deliver what the customer ordered. You don’t start tossing a Chicago Weekly instead of a Chicago Tribune. You would have no way of keeping your job.

Elden: *Groans*

Crowd: *Claps softly*

Jenna: I am the youngest one in this room by far, but I can tell you that the teenagers I know take their money seriously. We work hard for it just like all of you. We are looking for product to buy that we can trust. We’re looking for respect when we walk into a store. I think one of the best ways to show respect to anyone is to give them the best you’ve got to give. I can believe that is what Gladstone’s has offered to customers all these years.

Elden:*Frowning*

Mrs. Gladstone: *Smiling proud*

Jenna: So I am taking my fifty shares of stock and voting on Mrs. Gladstone to stay with this business, somehow. I know that this isn’t a ballot but that’s what I’m going to write on mine. Because I know that if she stays connected, this company will have a chance to keep the good things that everyone expects from Gladstone’s Shoes that people like Mrs. Gladstone and Harry Bender always kept safe.

Jenna: *Swallow Hard*

Jenna: *Whisper* I’m done.

Man 1: I’m voting with you.

Crowd: *Stand up one by one* Me too.

*Pause*

Announcer: The vote has been approved by the holders of seventy-three percent of the voting shares.

Mrs. Gladstone: *Stand straight and proud*

Announcer: But, over four hundred votes came in for Madeline Gladstone to stay with her company.

Crowd: *Clap*

Mrs. Gladstone: *Ram her cane to the ground* I accept! My son can tell you the woman in my family live to a ripe, old age. So, Elden I’m going to be around for a long, long time. Won’t that be nice dear?

Elden: *Half/ fake smile*

Narrator 1: Elden is now miserable and gloomy because he has to now spend time with the person he hates the most, his own mother.

Narrator 2: This is what happens when you get in between a woman and her business.

All is Fair in Love and War

Author’s Note: This is an essay defining and explaining one quote said by Mrs. Gladstone to Jenna said in the story Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer. This piece is a Text Analysis piece. The purpose is to explain the quote “It’s Harry Bender” she said firmly, choking back the tears. “He was in a car accident. Hit head-on by a drunk driver.” She shook her old head in disbelief. “My Lord, Jenna, he’s dead.” This story is about a young teenager named Jenna working at a shoe store. The owner of the shoe store, Mrs. Gladstone, asked Jenna to drive her half way across the country to Texas, for an unknown reason. Along the way they come across tough times and things they can’t control.

Have you ever thought about losing someone you love? How would you cope with all of your feelings? Would you control your feelings by crying, being cranky, or maybe just needing some alone time? In the story Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer Jenna, Mrs. Gladstone, and Alice lose somebody they all loved very much. They lost Mr. Harry Bender. He was a great man who always knew what to say. There is one quote in the story that impacted the book drastically. The quote is “It’s Harry Bender” she said firmly, chocking back the tears. “He was in a car accident. Hit head-on by a drunk driver.” She shook her old head in disbelief. “My Lord, Jenna, he’s dead.” This quote was said by Mrs. Gladstone telling Jenna about the tragic event that just happened. Their beloved Harry Bender had just died. This quote maybe self-explanatory but it is very meaningful in the adventure novel Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer.

Harry Bender was a great and down to Earth guy that everyone loved to be around. Unfortunately at 2:00 AM one morning in Texas he had a tragic accident that left every ones heart stopped and broken. Harry Bender was one of Mrs. Gladstone’s best friends and he helped her with everything from business to help with her son. Now he is gone and was to be never seen again. His amazing way to cheer people up and help them with anything that they threw at him will be missed from everyone who ever knew him. Harry Bender changed many people’s life including Jenna who met Mr. Bender a couple of days before his accident but it had seemed to Jenna that they have known each other forever. Even though Jenna didn’t know him very long she already thought on page 132 that she wished her dad was Harry Bender. Harry had such an impact on everyone’s life that he met.

Mr. Bender was a great man and he will be greatly missed by everyone who met him in this story, he always said things perfectly. When Mrs. Gladstone told Jenna about Harry's death can mean a lot of different things to different people but I think that Mrs. Gladstone said it with great passion and with just the right wording. It always seems that Mrs. Gladstone has the perfect things to say at just the right time, just like Mr. Bender. Just how she came in and said it flat out to Jenna means that she is going through something very hard. The way Mrs. Gladstone said “It’s Harry Bender” is great, besides just saying “Jenna, something happened to Harry Bender” she said it with more intensity to keep you wondering. It was said absolutely perfect. Also how she said “He was in a car accident. Hit head-on by a drunk driver.” Was also perfect because she didn’t say he was hit head on she just said “Hit- head-on by a drunk driver.” This also means she is going through something hard, at least when I am stressed out I either stutter or skip or jumble up all of my words. Mrs. Gladstone said it just like I would if I were so incredibly sad like she was, that is if I would be able to say it over all of my tears. After that she told Jenna the worst news, not just did Harry get in a car accident but he was dead. This was another perfect way of telling Jenna, “My Lord, Jenna, he’s dead.” It shows all in one sentence that she was hesitant of saying it because she added words unneeded like “My Lord”. This also tells us that Mrs. Gladstone is religious, which we haven't seen yet in the book. I have never had to tell somebody that a person close to them has died but I know if I had to I would not be as perfect as Mrs. Gladstone.

Although this quote can mean different things to different people, it still has the same significance to the book to everyone. This quote means a lot to this book, without Harry Bender Mrs. Gladstone does not have that help that is needed from him. I am not saying that Mrs. Gladstone will not be able to function without him but it will be harder because there is never going to be another guy that can help her as much as him. Harry was just an all around great guy and without him this book is going to be so different. Not just will Mrs. Gladstone miss him but everybody involved in the Gladstone Shoes business. Now that he is gone there is no one to do all of the work that he did to get the great name of Gladstone Shoes out to the public. Also the death of Mr. Bender is going to push back Mrs. Gladstone journey for a couple days because they need to arrange an unreal and after his funeral they are still going to be sad and mourning for a few days. Everybody will be affected by the death of a truly darling person.

In conclusion, Harry bender is going to be sincerely missed to many people but mostly to his family and Mrs. Gladstone. Even though this quote says everything straight out it can be very meaningful in the story Rules of the Road. Harry was a great guy that helped everyone that he was in acquaintance with. He even helped people with alcoholism; he would support them and try to make them stop drinking. Just the irony of this because Jenna's dad was an alcoholic and Mr. Bender got killed by a drunk driver has such a huge impact on the story. It will haunt Jenna later on because what if her dad wants her to get the car with him? What will happen then? Anybody should be proud to have known him. I would be so very proud if I could be as great of a person as he was. Finally the quote “He was in a car accident. Hit head-on by a drunk driver.” She shook her old head in disbelief. “My Lord, Jenna, he’s dead.” changed the book Rules of the Road drastically. It’s crazy how one death can impact as many as the death of Harry Bender.

Control

Author's Note: This is piece it's working on Character Development from the book Rules of the Roadby Joan Bauer. It describes how two characters have trouble with control. Jenna is a shoe saleswoman at Gladstone Shoes, then all of the sudden the owner of the business asked Jenna, the main character to drive her across the country to Texas.

Control, have you ever thought about it? There are things you can control and then there are things you can’t. Jenna Boller is a character in the adventure novel Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer. Jenna is an amazing shoe sales woman because she loves to do it and knows how very well. This is something she can control. She doesn’t deal with her alcoholic dad because it is something she can’t control. All she can do is sign her dad up for help but he would never go. Jenna’s attitude about selling shoes helps people every day when she is selling shoes. In the beginning of the story Jenna didn't know how to feel about Mrs. Gladstone, but by the end of the story Jenna was more confident and looked up to Mrs. Gladstone. Jenna learned that she is not just an old cranky woman but she can be sweet and that she has a soft side.Jenna does the things she can control to avoid the things she can’t manage.

Even though Jenna is great at doing things she can control, Mrs. Gladstone, Jenna’s boss isn’t as good at it. Mrs. Gladstone is an old, rich woman that is cranky who only control’s what she can. Although she is cranky she has a nice side to her. She helps people think again about everything they do and she helps make it better by giving them feedback. Mrs. Gladstone is trying to control her business Gladstone Shoes, but Elden is wrench in her plans. Elden is Mrs. Gladstone’s son; Elden is trying to take over her business. Mrs. Gladstone’s told Jenna that Elden is buying more and more stocks in Gladstone Shoes just so he can own more of it. Another thing Mrs. Gladstone’s can’t control is her getting old and getting old comes with consequences, such as a crippled leg. Mrs. Gladstone has a leg that is not working properly, she tries to get around as much as she can but her leg is getting too bad to walk. Mrs. Gladstone has things she can control and things she can’t.

In conclusion, these two characters have to deal with control, we all do. Mrs. Gladstone needs to deal with her son and getting old and Jenna has to stay in control of staying out of things she can’t manage. Staying involved in things Jenna can manage helps her stay away from her alcoholic dad. Jenna has changed throught this story, she has grown. Think, what can you use more control of?

Naughty to Nice

Author's Note: This is a response to the story Thank You, Ma'am by Langston Hughes. I am explaining one quote from the short story.

In the short story Thank You, Ma'am by Langston Hughes, Roger tries to steal Mrs. Jones's purse. Mrs. Jones then caught Roger and took him into her house for the night. In the beginning of the story you can tell Roger is a little ruder than he ends up being at the end of the story. Such as in the beginning of the story Roger lies to Mrs. Jones about him running into her purse and not trying to steal it but by the end of the story Roger had changed and asked Mrs. Jones "Do you need somebody to go to the store, maybe to get some milk or something?". This shows that Roger put some thought into the fact that this woman is going to feed him and she helped him wash his face and he realized the least he could do was ask to go get more food for her. In my mind Roger learned something through out his experience that day, I think he learned that everything does happen for a reason. He had the urge to steal this woman's purse and if he wouldn't have he would have never had got fed or got a clean face and he wouldn’t have gotten his blue suede shoes. This story reminds me a lot of the story April Morning. In this story Adam starts off being snotty and rude to his dad. By the end of the book Adam is a young man after his dad dies and he is more mature and kind to people. In the end Adam got pride and Roger got his blue suede shoes.

What a Revolution! (Compare and Contrast)

This is a compare and contrast essay about the movie The Patriot and the book April Morning.

Has anyone close to you died before? Has anyone close to every gone into the war? Or maybe two people you know have gotten together and became a couple. These are all events that are similar between the movie The Patriot and in the historical fiction novel April Morning. Both of these stories or during the Revolutionary War and are filled with real life situations that happened during the late 1700’s. Even though these two true stories have a similar plot line they have other similarities and differences as well.

If you were to read or see both of these true tales you would learn that there are a lot of the same events that happen within them. In the book April Morning there is a fifteen year old boy named Adam who wants to join his cities militia. Adam’s dad who Adam does not get along with finally lets him do something that he wants to so that night they are suiting up for war. Tragically Adam’s dad Moses dies in the opening battle. The rest of the story explains how Adam has to be the fifteen year old man of the house and help is widowed mother through everything. As you will learn The Patriot and April Morning are a lot alike, they show the same setting, plot line, and even the characters are similar. The Patriot starts off as a family that is happy and loves to be with each other but then oldest son Gabriel comes running into the house wounded. His dad Benjamin who is a widowed father of seven children takes care of his son to recovery. Gabriel tells his dad that the British are close by so be ready. The British come and unfortunately kill the second oldest son Thomas. This forces Gabriel and Benjamin to go into the war to get revenge. They formed a militia around the city and they were off. Throughout the movie they faced the red coats lots of times but one time it was the worst. The British Colonel Tavington had killed Gabriel his father found him just in time to say their final good-byes. Now Benjamin was a widow of 5 children. During a long gruesome final battle Gabriel got revenge on Tavington for killing both of his sons by killing him and forcing the British to surrender. As you can see the two stories are a lot alike already.

In these two historical fictions that are both based on a true story are a lot alike. There are many ways that these stories are alike the first and main way is they are both in the time period of the Revolutionary War and both of the families live in Lexington, Massachusetts. Both stories have Lexington forming militias as well. That is one of the main similarities; another one is a main character dies in both stories. In April Morning the dad dies in the opening battle, but in The Patriot two boys die but the dad stays alive. Seeing that the dad died in April Morning he is leaving the mother widowed. Also in The Patriot, the movie starts off with the dad being a widow. That is another similarity. One more corresponding connection is in both the book and the movie a young kid goes into war. In April Morning Adam Cooper goes into war only being fifteen and in The Patriot Gabriel (who can’t be any older than 18) goes into the war. Finally in both adventures there are couples that start, in April Morning Adam and Ruth get together which was a very unexpected couple and in The Patriot Gabriel and Aunt Charlotte get together as well. Those examples are just among the many similarities.

Not only are these stories alike they are also different in ways as well. Besides the obvious differences one of the main differences is in the movie the dad and the son loved each other very much and always wanted to be around each other but in the book it was almost the exact opposite. Obviously the father and the son love each other in both narratives but in the book April Morning the father and son did not get along. Also in The Patriot there is one main bad British soldier Colonel Tavington but in the book there are many bad red coats there is not one main soldier. One of the more obvious differences is in the book the father dies (Moses) but in the movie the sons die (Gabriel and Thomas). This is about it for differences, in my mind there are more similarities than differences.

In conclusion, these stories are more alike than different. As you can see the numbers of similarities are significantly higher than the number of differences. I was overall pleased with both stories, I feel they have taught me a lot about the Revolutionary War and how it was fought and won. I would recommend this book and this movie to anyone who wants to learn about our history in our country. Remember, even if two stories have similar plot lines and settings they can be very different as well as similar in other ways.

Chapter 30

Author’s Note: This is an added chapter to a book I read called Kiss and Blog. It ended with Winter and Sloane having a fight because of a blog Winter made about Sloane. Winter finally got together with the man of her dreams Rey. This chapter is an epilogue to this book.

Chapter 30
*One Year Later*

Last week Mr. Rigby somehow found my house phone number and he called me pleading to me to reconsider. I thought for a while and I finally decided to accept. I know it is against everything that I had said a year ago. Remember there is a secret with everything that happens; my book was not my blog but I asked Mr. Rigby if I could write something else to be published so I didn’t frame Sloane. I feel a lot better about myself doing it his way.

Because of my book I am now one of the most famous writers in the state. My book was on the best seller list. Everything worked out fine. The only part I hate about being famous is the paparazzi. They follow me everywhere. I feel like I can’t do anything without then knowing. I can’t go on dates or even go shopping like every other girl can.

I hate the paparazzi the most because of Rey and I. We are still together and better than ever. We have our one year anniversary tomorrow and I can’t wait. We are going out to dinner then we are going to a movie. We are seeing a new comedy movie that has a twist of romance. I can’t wait. I need to go get ready; you know how I am with getting ready. I always got to look good for Rey. I am going to wear a cute little yellow dress and black heels with only mascara on my eyes. My mom doesn’t like eye shadow she thinks it’s bad for the environment.

I just can’t wait to go with Rey tonight!

Your Worst Choice Yet

Author’s Note: This is a letter to a main character telling him how he should have handled a situation. The problems and solution he should have used are recognized.

Dear Michael Obi,

I read your story in Language Arts and I was intrigued how you disrespected the elderly priest. The priest was nice and pleasant and you just disregarded everything! If you would have just agreed with him the villagers would have never destroyed some of your school ground. The hedging would still be beautiful and all of your remarkable flowers would still be in place and blooming, but because of your disrespect you affected your job permanently!

If you could just have been a little nicer would would have changed everything. By saying “I am sorry sir I did not know how much significance this path meant to you and all of your village members. I would never have covered it if I knew” it would have changed so much and your school would be normal. If that is too nice you and the priest could have came to some sort of agreement. Maybe you could have a gate on the path and anybody who wants to use it could open the gate. There are so many options for what you could have said. You could have said anything but what you did!

The priest of Ani said to you “Look hear, my son. This path was here before you were born and before your father was born. The whole life of this village depends on it. Our dead relatives depart by it and our ancestors visit us by it. But most important, it is the path of children coming in to be born.” He is telling you that this path does not just matter to the elderly and to the deceased, it is important to the children to come into this world. Because of your ignorance you replied with a rude comment. Hasn’t your mom ever told you to respect your elders?

Even though you got what you wanted because you didn’t take down the blockings to the path, your school grounds got destroyed because people still used the path. You always need to remember there is a difference between educated and intelligent. You think you are educated but you need to know what you are talking about and be able to think quickly about situations. Just like your situation with the priest, if you would have thought about cause and affects before you say something stupid. All because you didn’t do this you affected your job permanently.

In conclusion if you would have just thought about your answer before you told the priest of Ani, nothing bad would have happened. Like I said before you should have just told the priest that you would make a gate so people could use it with your permission. In result of your rude answer citizens destroyed some of your school property and it cost you money. Also you got a bad review because of it. Before I go, I want you to try to be nicer to people and not be so ignorant!

Thank you for your time,
Madison Giordano

Does being popular matter?

Think to yourself, does being popular really matter? In my mind I don't think being popular should impact the way you live your life. I admit I am not the most popular girl in school but I have never had a problem with my friends. But I will also admit that I am not a loser at school either, I have great friends that I love to death. In the novel How to be Popular the main character Stephanie wants to be popular very bad. I think this is ridiculous. She has nice friends and a great life but she wants to be popular. I mean who doesn’t but she is changing herself to become popular at her school. This book intrigues me because I can relate to it, but I would never do what she is. I can’t wait to see what she ends up doing to try to become popular.
