My Muddy Life

Author's Note: This is a piece in the point of view of a pig. This is meant to be creative and different.

Dear anybody who is going to the State Fair,

Hello my name is Peggy, I am a Pig. I am not just any old pig, I am the most beautiful pig there is. My coat is shiny and smooth and my teeth are as white as snow. The best part about being a pig is today. Today is a very special day; it is not any normal day. Today I am getting taken to the State Fair to be shown to thousands of people. They will look and admire me all day and hopefully they will vote me first prize and I will get a blue ribbon!

The preparation for today isn’t as easy as any pig would think. First I am getting fed so much food to make me more plump so I can look more attractive, next I get bathed in soy milk to make my coat look extra shiny. Finally I have to learn a routine to impress the judges. My routine is different then everyone else and I am very excited!

I very much so hope I am going to win! Please, all I ask is for you to come and see me and vote for me. I would be forever grateful of you. Thanks and have fun at the State Fair!

Yours Truly,
Peggy the Pig

Power to the People

Author’s Note: This is a response to the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson explaining a theme in the story, power.

When I say lottery, what do u think of? Do you think of money and happiness or death and sorrow? In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson the lottery is not what we think, it is between life and death. In this cured town, if you get an evil black dot on your slip of paper you have been chosen to be stoned to death by your friends, enemies and loved ones. The worst part about is you can’t do anything about it because the government is in total power. One of the main themes in the story “The Lottery” is power because the government has total power in the town.
First off, the government makes you go to this town meeting and even worse you can be picked to be stoned to death. The government had complete control over the town and they wanted to remind you of that with this annual lottery. This kind of power is not good because it is a cruel way for someone to die. Think, what if your kids and friends were throwing little pebbles at you to your death? Do you think that would be your pleasurable way to die? I know I don’t think so. The Government in the town is cruel, I know for a fact I could not watch my mother being stoned to death. Government should not tell you when to do something and how you are going to die unless you have maybe committed a crime or have to pay a bill.

In conclusion, the government in the short story “The Lottery” has total control but in a very cruel way. They have control over too much in their town and they kill innocent people annually just because it’s a tradition. The cruelest thing about it is they make everybody in their town kill them by throwing rocks at them, even their children.

My Wishes

Author's Note: This piece is in the point of view of a sad, lonely Marigold that is the last one in the flower bed.

Dear Keeper of this Ground,

Hello. Remember me? I was your favorite flower about 2 months back. You would feed me with care every day. My petals were orange with a slight pink hue. I sat here happy, every day talking to my friends and swaying in the wind. I loved the feel of airstream through my tough petals. Those were the days; I use to love my life and couldn’t wait for those breezy summer days.

But, that was then and this is now. I am now the only one in the flower bed outside your bedroom window. I have wilting petals and I hate the wind, all it does is make it harder to keep my petals attached. I have two petals left; I would give up anything for my old life back.

All I am asking for is some water, a little love, and a few friends. I know that my time may be coming for this year but I’ll be back in about 8 months after the evil white fluff leaves. When that time comes I would really like some friends, I love having a nice petal to petal conversation with them.

Please don’t forget me,

Georgina your marigold

You Never Know Who You Might End Up In Love With

Author's Note: This essay is about the book Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti. This story is about two young girls who fall in love with the same guy. This essay will explain how the main character Lani is a dynamic character while working on using better vocabulary.

If you think about it fate and serendipity play a huge role in our lives. In the beginning of the realistic fiction novel Something Like Fate, Lani and her best friend Erin are inseparable until Erin finds a new boy friend Jason. Lani is a true believer in date and thinks her whole life revolves around it. Every day she checks her horoscopes to see if it is going to be a good day or a bad day. In the beginning of the story Lani had different attitudes than the end and this shows she is a dynamic character.

When Erin got the perfect boyfriend she could ask for in the beginning of the book, Jason, Lani started having to hang out with him more than Erin. In the beginning Lani didn’t like Jason, she though he was not right nor Erin at all. But Lani's attitude changed towards Jason very quickly. When Lani started hanging out with Erin and Jason she realized a certain bond between herself and Jason. She thought to herself on page 56 "I can feel chemistry between us." Lani then developed strong feelings towards Jason and she couldn't tell her best friend, Erin
.
Although, Lani's attitude changed toward Jason doesn't mean that Jason is the only one that Lani's attitude changed towards. As I have stated Erin and Lani were great friends since they were in kindergarten, they were friends that could tell each other anything. But when Erin got a boy friend you would think their friendship would blossom but it did the opposite. Erin and Lani’s friendship was now on its way to dying. Lani was always the one to plan everything but when Erin started hanging out with Jason that all changed. Lani was now the third wheel and never got to do anything with just Erin, Jason always had to be there. Lani thought that Erin would always be there for her but Lani's attitude toward Erin changed as the novel went on. Eventually Erin went to a summer camp for 3 months and Lani and Jason hung out a lot. Jason wrote Erin a letter breaking up with her and he and Lani started dating. As you could assume, Erin was very unhappy with Lani and they had a huge fight. Erin then turned everyone against Lani at school by sending an email to the school about what happened. Erin of course blew everything out of proportion and Lani started to get bullied by everyone at school. Lani got dirty looks daily. This wasn’t fair for Erin to do this to Lani, she should have been happy that Lani was happy with Jason.

Lani had to go through a lot with Jason and Lani, but she grew as a person from it all, so it didn’t turn out completely horrible. Lani became stronger mentally throughout this book; she had to learn to fight through people bullying her. People would send her notes and she just had to ignore them and remember that she is happy with Jason. She stopped seeing Jason and that was the “hardest thing I ever did”, as she said in the book. She didn’t just grow mentally she learned that love can last even through tough times; you just have to pull through it and persevere. This is a reason that Lani is a dynamic character. After all of this blew over, Lani was a better person, she got her best friend back, and her dream boy friend and she made up.

Lani had some tough times in high school, but she also affected others too. Lani was very strong throughout everything she went through. She taught other people that get bullied that they can still be happy. She was still her up beat self and that’s what they had to learn to do. Also she affected Lani entirely, she taught her many life lessons that everyone should learn. One of the many lessons were everything can be repaired no matter the extent. Whether it’s a friendship or your self-esteem.. Lani effected many people in this novel and everyone that reads this book learns these lessons as well.

In conclusion, Lani and her best friend Erin had an enormous fight but they pulled through while teaching others life lessons. Lani’s attitude changed greatly throughout this novel. The book Something Like Fate has great lessons and characters that attitudes changed throughout the story. Lani started the story being a weak person mentally but by the end she was stronger than the strongest man alive. This shows that Lani was for sure a dynamic character. As Lani did, always remember to persevere when things go wrong, it never pays to be down on yourself all it does it brings you down.
